Overview

This course will cover the context of legislation, EYFS Safeguarding and Welfare Requirements, and the Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures:



  • key elements of a child protection policy

  • highlight changes with regard to the MASH

  • writing policy and procedures to help staff deal with the scenarios that they might face

  • consulting with stakeholders

  • communicating with parents and children

  • ensuring that workers are familiar with, and parents are aware of, the policy
    training needs in relation to the policy


The course will enable the manager and/or safeguarding lead practitioner to develop a child protection policy and to communicate appropriately with staff and parents about the issues.


Updated safeguarding requirement September 2016 - "During term time, or when the setting is in operation, the designated safeguarding lead or an appropriately trained deputy should be available during opening hours for staff to discuss safeguarding concerns."

Learning outcomes

  • To gain knowledge and information to develop a comprehensive set of safeguarding policies and procedures for your setting

  • To recognise the importance of a child protection policy and your role in ensuring that it is appropriate and fit for purpose

  • To understand the role and responsibilities of Safeguarding leads / designated child protection staff

Additional information

This course presumes a good working knowledge of issues related to safeguarding children. It follows on from the introductory safeguarding children workshop. Participants are expected to have completed this or an equivalent course. Designated members of staff for safeguarding need to have training every two years and their knowledge and skills should be refreshed at least annually. Further multi-agency training is available from the Local Safeguarding Children Board.
